On Friday, January 27, 2023, Islip Town’s Unity Council hosted its first Unity Ceremony at Town Hall West, attended by several hundred members of the community, including elected officials, organizational leaders, Veterans groups, residents, school and local hospital representatives. January 27th is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said she was inspired to host the Unity ceremony after attending a Blue Mass of Prayer and Remembrance for law enforcement officers organized by the Suffolk County PBA back in November.
“Taking the experience we had at the Blue Mass, I met with the Town of Islip Unity Council members, who agreed with the goal, which was to bring us here today in the spirit of joining together as one Town, one community, one people,” said Carpenter. “As we take a moment to acknowledge that today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, it is so important that we always remember that we should be united as one human race in our steadfast commitment to peace and unity.”
Last year Islip’s Anti-Bias Task Force was officially renamed the Town of Islip Unity Council. Joining in the ceremony were Islip Town Board members James O’Connor; Jorge Guadron; John M. Lorenzo; Town Clerk Olga Murray and Receiver of Taxes Andy Wittman.
