Hobbies are an important part of people's lives. They give us a healthy outlet to pursue our interests, explore new ones, and disconnect from stress to recharge. For some people, hobbies can become opportunities to meet new people, travel to new places, and earn income. They can also play important roles in our lives and come to us unexpectedly. For Bobby Burns, his passion for carpentry started in the twenty-teens, during the construction of Hudson Yards. Since then, Burns has spent his free time creating live-edge epoxy tables, cutting boards, charcuterie boards, birdhouses, and Little Free Library boxes. As chief engineer for Warner Bros., with a 38-year career, Burns and his team of 19 people operate 24/7 to ensure that their offices are well maintained. His team manages HVAC, power generators, and other infrastructure to keep daily operations running. During the construction of Hudson Yards, he saw crates coming in and out of the site and was inspired to take up carpentry.

Weekly in August on Thursday and Saturday (9 a.m.-2 p.m.) NY State Parks Shark Shack Sharks are an extremely diverse group of animals on the planet, yet they’re also among the most feared. In this hands-on program at Robert Moses Field 5, near the playground (weather permitting), patrons will learn that this group of fish is full of diversity! The Shark Shack is meant to educate the public about the shark species native to New York while also introducing other marine life in our waters and how to guide a shark interaction. Experience the pop-up display full of shark-related items, turning what once was fear into fascination! This event is FREE to attend. The subject of the Epstein files speaks for itself, but less has been said about their connection to Fire Island, where several local communities were collectively mentioned dozens of times in those sordid files. While the information in the files does not imply evidence of crimes committed locally, it does show that Jeffrey Epstein's associates communicated with the infamous pedophile while visiting our island, as well as through various incidental mentions.

It was a mild and tranquil Christmas Day on Fire Island, as all who stayed here over the holiday can attest. However, after the holiday bliss, residents who live here year-round woke up to no electricity as early as 2 a.m. this morning. The outage appears to extend from the Atlantique community through the western half of Ocean Beach. PSEG Long Island has not responded to our questions about the cause of this outage. Power was restored at approximately 12:15 p.m. Over the past nine hours, affected households used their emergency power generators, if available—those who did not waited it out.

While interviewing our Fire Island centenarian population is always important, this was a rare opportunity for our Behind the Dunes section.
