DAVIS PARK

DAVIS PARKBy Cathy ShislerMemorial Day weekend is over and summer officially begins at Davis. There was beach weather finally after so many cold days; we all thought that would never come. Saturday and Sunday the ferry brought over day-trippers and there was a lot of boats in the harbor. People enjoyed their first day of sitting on the beach with their toes in the sand and a drink in hand. The ocean water was way too cold to go in, but there were some brave souls who ran in and quickly ran back out. We all started our base tans (always please use sunscreen) and enjoyed the barbeques and company. The Casino had its opening night on that Friday, and people loved the new dishes on the menu. Locals got together and caught up on their winter. On Saturday Ed Travers kicked off the weekend at the Casino Bar. A packed out deck of people danced and drank and enjoyed the newly renovated bar. Saturday continued with 20 Highview Band that followed. Unfortunately, due to rain on Monday the Belairs was cancelled. It was an inside day for most.If you are new to our community or been here for years you might not know the history behind our little post office/library which now is run by our Post Mistress Linda Firpo. But there have been many post mistresses. As far back as 1958 was Ethel Shand, who was the first to be Post Mistress of Davis Park. The certificate she received dated April 24,1958 hangs in her granddaughter’s beach house. Ethel was post mistress till 1971. Then Dianne Chucchillo from 1972-1974, Vicky Rudtke from 1975-1977, Kathy Hamill in 1978. Doris Falvey resides on 3rd walk and has great stories of her days in the post office when she was there from 1979-2005 with Delia Farrell who was there from 1979-2005. Pat Bodkin took over from 2006-2010, and now Linda from 2006 till she says 2025.Davis Park 1The Davis Park post office is located across from the Davis Park Fire Department. It   opened in 1956, attached to a building with no windows, and now courtesy of the Davis Park Fire Department, it’s now located on wider and refurbished Main Walk. The post office opens from July 1 to September 1. If you pass by now you will see Linda getting the post office ready for the upcoming season. She always offers something new (can’t wait to see what she has this year). Watch for the grand opening that Linda hosts, she always has great treats like last year her shredded coconut and biscotti. The post office will be open Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., where you can get your stamps, receive and send letters. If you want to receive something back please have return address as 1 Main Walk, Davis Park Patchogue NY 11772.Davis Park 3editLinda offers Davis Park stickers and postcards of pictures she has taken herself, stop in and send one to a friend. Linda also has greeting cards, and offers some fun activities for the kids when they visit the post office. Our Post Office also doubles as a lending library. A wide variety of books have been donated; old and new books you can take out while you are here on vacation (please return them before leaving.) There are magazines too that you can pick up to read while you are relaxing on the beach. You can also pick up books from our local authors. Linda also receives lost phones either dead or locked, so if you lost a phone come to Linda’s phone lost and found.Hope you attended our Davis Park Association spring meeting at the church on June 4.
