Long Island residents participated in this year’s inaugural Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, August 26, which met at Saltaire Yacht Club in the the community of Saltaire, an incorporated village on Fire Island, New York. Participants raised more than $14,000 to support the care, support and research programs of the Alzheimer’s Association the event.

“It was great to bring Walk to End Alzheimer’s to the Fire Island area,” said Tinamarie Hardekopf, Director of Development for the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter. “Thank you to Saltaire Yacht Club and the Dive in Kismet for being part of the inaugural event and supporting the Alzheimer’s Association.”

During the walk, participants honored those affected by Alzheimer’s with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony — a mission-focused experience that signifies our solidarity in the fight against the disease. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent people’s connection to Alzheimer’s — their personal reasons to end the disease.

The 1.5 mile walk concluded at a modern beach bar called Dive in Kismet. Walkers received bracelets for discounted drinks and the Dive sold raffle tickets for prizes donated by local merchants with proceeds going towards Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In New York alone, there are more than 410,000 people living with the disease and 546,000 caregivers.
