Fire Island National Seashore Awards Passenger Ferry Contract

Still from “4 Sayville Ferries” by Stewart Finch.

Once again, Fire Island National Seashore has selected Sayville Ferry Service, Inc., to operate passenger ferry service between the South Shore Long Island and Sailors Haven Marina within the park. The concession contract was awarded through a competitive bidding process.

“We are grateful visitors have access to safe and reliable transportation across the Great South Bay to the Sailors Haven and Sunken Forest areas through this partnership,” said Superintendent Alexcy Romero.

The operation provides water transportation for visitors. The approximately 4.4 nautical mile journey takes visitors between Browns River in Sayville and Sailors Haven Marina, just east of the Sunken Forest, and directly across the Great South Bay. The contract includes the operation of passenger cargo service and authorizes sales of visitor convenience items.

“We are excited to work in partnership with the National Park Service to continue our service to Sailors Haven/Sunken Forest,” said Ken Stein III, president of Sayville Ferry Service, Inc. “One of our favorite aspects of this contract is supporting educational trips, where students and camp participants are able to learn at the visitors center, go on guided tours of the Sunken Forest, and enjoy the safety of a lifeguard staffed beach. We look forward to continuing to provide outstanding experiences for park visitors.”

Sayville Ferry Service, Inc. is the existing concessioner. It has provided ferry service to Fire Island communities since 1894 and has operated under concession contracts with the NPS for decades.
