The artwork that graces our June 6 edition of Fire Island News was painted by Susan Ann Thornton, founder of the Artist Tour of Cherry Grove. The popular self-guided walking tour exhibition, now 12 years strong, is a favorite early June event, and Thornton tells us all about it in our interview with her.
Our second issue of the season is also being released only days into Pride Month. Gay history articles, feature interviews, essays, and the vibrant images by photographer Susan Kravitz are some of the elements in this issue that pay homage to this. This theme is carried into our Behind the Dunes real estate section, where we discuss an iconic Cherry Grove property currently on the market. Please also refer to our community calendar to find Pride Month events taking place on Fire Island, the South Shore, and Greater Long Island this month. These events are listed in this issue and on our website, which is updated daily with newly submitted events.
Other relevant information inside this issue includes our ongoing coverage of TOI-360, chronicling Islip Town’s development of their master plan, of which a significant portion of Fire Island is a part; a camp guide which we hope serves as a helpful resource for parents new to the Fire Island scene; we also recap highlights of Memorial Day Weekend in our community columns, photo pages, and American tunes – a warm welcome to Glyn Emmerson, who will be covering Fire Island’s robust music scene periodically over the summer.
