While beachgrass and bluegrass are different, Kentucky Derby watch parties are significant events on Fire Island, and they truly deserve this status. Many beach town bars have just opened their doors for the season, which is worth celebrating. The Run for the Roses is best enjoyed in the company of peers. So, find a fine hat, and consider these Fire Island locations to cheer on the race on Saturday, May 3rd:

🌹Cherry Grove: Race for a cause, as The Island Breeze will host their Run for the Roses party from 4-7 p.m. with a special fundraising benefit to help support the Cherry Grove Fire Department.

🌹Davis Park: The folks in Davis Park know how to party, so the Casino Café is always a sought-after location. Derby Day is also opening day for the Casino. Doors open at noon.

🌹 Fair Harbor: The Derby Party at Le Dock also marks their opening weekend. Happy Hour begins at 3 p.m., and dinner ends at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Reservations suggested at Ledockrestaurant.com.

🌹 Fire Island Pines: The Greater Fire Island Pines Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 17th Annual Derby Party at Sip N Twirl beginning at 5 p.m. There will be a best hat contest, 50/50 raffles, and DJ music by Fin contributor Mike Borowski.

🌹 Ocean Beach: While some bars and derby parties are most likely happening in the unofficial Fire Island capital, The Island Mermaid may be the best bet. There will be drink specials and a “name the horse” contest. The lucky winner will receive a bar crawl day pass, in which they will receive one free drink at every restaurant in Ocean Beach, courtesy of The Island Mermaid.
