Twenty-two-year-old Steven Vazquez of Ackerson Boulevard in Bay Shore was arrested today by Suffolk County Police, and charged with 2nd Degree Assault, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th in the Degree, Resisting Arrest, Menacing a Police Officer, and Grand Larceny of the 4th Degree.
Shortly after midnight, a 911 call was placed reporting men attempting to steel items in parked vehicles in the Amity Harbor section of Copaigue. Upon arrival at the corner of East Gibbs Road and Western Concourse , 19-year-old Marcello Martinez of North Babylon was arrested on the scene by First Precinct officers, but his accomplice managed to flee.
A short time later, officers located Vazquez hiding under a parked vehicle on Gibbs Road. Upon attempting another escape, Vazquez stabbed an officer in the upper right thigh and slashed him in the face before other officers apprehended him.
The officer was treated and released from a local hospital, after receiving on site emergency first aid which included applying a tourniquet to his injured leg.
Martinez, has been charged with Possession of Burglar’s Tools and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th Degree.
Both men are scheduled to be be arraigned on May 7 at First District Court in Central Islip.
