Rose’s View: Cherry Grove & Fire Island Pines

Henry Robin, president of FIPPOA, and his committee members organized a fantastic party to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Pines, on the beach at Fisherman Path. Cull House catered delicious food including lobster rolls, roast chicken, and salads. Drinks and desserts were also on the menu. DJ Lena was welcomed back to the Pines as she recreated her DJ duties.

Sasha Velour, won the ninth season on “Ru Paul’s Drag Race” in 2017. She appeared at Whyte Hall in 2023. Her performance was incredible. A cocktail party to Meet and Greet Sasha was held at Jim Dale’s house on Ocean Walk.  

Matt Baney presented “75 And Counting” at the Community House with a wonderful new group of performers. It was a great success.

Gerri (Skinner) MacWhinnie had a family reunion. It represented seven generations that began in Cherry Grove in 1911. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cousins arrived from Australia, New Zealand, New York and all over the country.

CGCAI President Amy Schreiber was thrilled to be celebrated at her birthday dinner party with 30 friends. 

Rhonda Potteraka (Sugar B. Real) is recovering from a serious surgery. Let’s all wish her a speedy recovery.

Congratulations to all the firefighters who contained a structure fire that occurred at a Fire Island Pines house on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Fortunately, no one was hurt and many neighboring Fire Island fire departments lent mutual aid.

Daniel Nardiccio put together a fabulous 2023 season of icon entertainers at the Ice Palace. I was thrilled as Rose Levine to be a part of it. It was exciting to see Chita Rivera, Patti Lupone, and Marilyn Maye among others. The Miss Fire Island pageant gets an early start this summer, taking place on Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Ice Palace. 

Cherry Grove Garden Club will have their annual bake sale on Sept. 3, at 11 a.m., at The Community House. An appreciation of thanks to all who buy and donate cakes, cookies or pies. 

B’Nai Olam is celebrating their 50th Anniversary at Whyte Hall. High Holiday Services: Rosh Hashanah, Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 16, at 10:30 a.m. Yom Kippur services: Sunday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 25, at 10:30 a.m. and closing service 6:30 p.m. 

Gather your glitter and glitz on Sept. 23 for Diamonds Are Forever, the annual end of season ball at the Community House. 

The Pines Conservation Society is having their annual Go Native talk and tour on Sept 24, from 10:30-noon, at Whyte Hall. Doug Tallamy will be guest speaker.

Sad farewells to Phil Ferraro and Walter Quetsch, both longtime residents of Cherry Grove, and Mike Jaggi, who worked in the Pines for many years. All will be a loss to our communities.
