Rose’s View ~ Cherry Grove & Fire Island Pines

Carpenter Somers, now 17 years old, grew up in Cherry Grove. He performed on the outdoor roof space at the Community House to an enthusiastic audience. He was at ease singing songs that he wrote himself, while playing his guitar and harmonica, as well as sprinkling in favorites by Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Paul Simon and others. It was reminiscent of a 1970’s Greenwich Village coffee house gathering. His father, Asa Somers, is currently appearing in “Dear Evan Hansen”on Broadway. Rachel Green, Ursula Borelli, John Masiello and I attended a performance last week and loved seeing Asa on stage.

Hal Hayes and Anthony Thompson hosted a successful fundraiser for Antiviolence Project at Hal’s Oceanfront home. Beverly Tillery, executive director, greeted and thanked all for coming. The incredible Shaquita performed and hosted a fantastic show and introduced two new drag entertainers, Koko Nutwaters and Egypt. Now they are officially Fire Island drag performers.

Lambda celebrated their 44th fundraiser in Fire Island Pines. Todd Sears, David Aldea and Paddy Pillington were the gracious hosts, making it the 14th time they took on this important role. The many guests enjoyed the luncheon and pool party. Since their inception, Lambda has represented many important gay causes. While there, I met Democratic candidate Tony Simone, who is running for State Assembly in the Hell’s Kitchen district in Manhattan.

The Pines Co-ops had their annual party on their outdoor lawn.  Jack Kabin was honored for living in his apartment 50 years.

Mike Fisher and Gary Sachs held a big bash at their oceanfront home to celebrate Mike’s 65th birthday. It was a fantastic time.

Weatherman Sam Champion was seen enjoying drinks in Cherry Grove.

FIPPAP presents Fashion in The Pines 2022, featuring new young designers, coordinated by DEN-I-ZEN, at Whyte Hall, on Saturday, Aug. 20, at 5 p.m.  Produced by Ryan Espinosa and JD Winston. I remember the runway shows at the Botel in the 1970s where Giorgio Sant’Angelo, Calvin Klein, Leo Narducci, Tracy Mills, Geoffrey Beane, Cathy Hardwick and Perry Ellis   were just a few designers who lived on Fire Island and showed off their garments.

Many important fashion styles and trends were born right here in the Pines and the Grove. Some of the above mentioned even designed gowns for Rose Levine for her shows at that time.

Finally, the Pines mourns the loss of long-time business man Doug Teague. Please read the obituary in this issue, prepared by his loving family.
