Multiple fire departments from neighboring Fire Island communities and across the Great South Bay responded to a structure fire in Fire Island Pines shortly after midnight.
The house involved was reported to be fully engulfed by 12:39 p.m. Multiple crews worked together alongside Fire Island Pines Fire Department (FIPFD) to contain the aggressive flames, which were fanned by ocean wind conditions. The fire was ultimately brought under control, with firefighters remaining on the scene for approximately four hours. According to FIPFD Chief Kyle Merker, a second alarm was activated while the fire was in progress, but he described that situation as “under control.”
While no injuries were reported, Chief Merker said one FIP firefighter fell thought the first floor of the during building, but was extracted safely and without harm.
The residential house involved, 241 Bay Walk has been deemed a total loss. While no cause has yet been officially determined, it is believed at this time that the fire may have started in a sauna that was on site of the property.
Mutual Aid departments included the Fire Island communities of Cherry Grove, Davis Park, Point O’Woods, Ocean Bay Park, Ocean Beach, and Fair Harbor, as well as the South Shore Long Island communities of West Sayville, Sayville, Bayport, West Islip, East Islip, and Community Exchange Ambulance Service of the Islips.
