Atlantique

By Kirsten CorssenSummer 2017 is in full swing: We have boats filling the marina, houses opened for the season, lifeguards up on the stand and Brian’s arm already sore from pouring rocket fuels at The Shack. With all this life back on the island we have a big summer ahead of us, so here’s what’s going on this summer in Atlantique! The ShackBesides being able to order some tasty fries and rocket fuels all day everyday, we have a long list of what Gavin and Brian have up their sleeves for this summer. Happy Hour will run this year Monday–Friday, from 5-7 p.m., with discounts on all your favorite drinks. Every Saturday and Sunday there will be live bands to get the crowd dancing on the walkway and maybe even the bar! Some of these bands include Kerry Kearney Band, Jerry DeMeo, and everyone’s favorite salsa band Sabori. The Shack is also trying something new this summer with special events going on during the week. They are starting Bingo night on Wednesday evenings, and Kids Karaoke (day yet to be determined). So keep your eyes on the chalkboard when heading down to the beach to see what is going on everyday at The Shack.Rich MahoganyThe Atlantique holiday that brings everyone off his or her boats and over to the handball courts. Rich Mahogany, to me at least, is the soundtrack to Fire Island. They travel to just about every town to show off their musical talents. This year they will be stopping by Atlantique on Aug. 5, and hopefully will bring an amazing opening act like last year’s Haley Mae-Campbell. Make sure you get a good slip for that weekend so you can party with Rich Mahogany.LifeguardsHere to keep you safe this summer! The lifeguards will start back up full time on June 24. This means everyday you’ll be able to swim with ease knowing the lifeguards have your back. From now until June 24 you’ll see them doing maintenance during the week preparing for the summer. If you know anyone look-ing to become an ocean guard be sure to ask them how to get involved. On the DockWe all love our dockmasters – they do more than just grab your lines and swipe your credit card. They have been working hard this preseason to get the marina in tip-top shape. With Carrie as the wonderful head dockmaster, she makes sure to keep the bathrooms clean the marina in order. Make sure to give them some love this summer – that new paint on the buildings and white line on the dock did not paint themselves!Fire Island Ocean Charity SwimThis is the 6th Annual Fire Island Ocean Charity Swim that starts off in Atlantique Beach. This swim is hosted by a non-for-profit organization with all the proceeds going to Hospice Children Care Network Bereavement program. This year it is happening on July 8, with the race starting at 11 a.m. Kids are welcome to swim the 400-meter or the 1-mile, and adults 18 years and up can swim the 1-mile or the 5k. Sponsors and volunteers are always welcome! If you would like to be part of this one-of-a-kind event, please contact Bryan Krut, who is also an Atlantique lifeguard, at 516-356-5306, bkrutowswimli@gmail.com or www.openwaterswimli.com.
