When the first issue of Fire Island News is put to bed just before Memorial Day Weekend, there no feeling quite as invigorating for us in the news room. It’s an activity filled with the promise of all the good things yet to come over the summer ahead.
This year, we are returning to our original 1957 name. Last summer’s transitional name was necessary as we prepared to launch Great South Bay News in the fall, and by the end of winter, readers began responding to its presence in a significant way. Great South Bay News will continue to publish monthly through the summer.
However, there’s no doubt that the two papers have their own distinct vibes.
Our cover was generated for a pop-up photo contest we ran on social media. With only a two-week time window, I was surprised by the number of entries we received, especially on our Instagram page. Choosing just one was a challenge, but Krissy Finchum won the honor from a team of impartial judges. Read her story in our upcoming edition.
In our Behind the Dunes real estate section, the feature article by Joe Cook writes about Daniel Dale’s acquisition of Larson Realty in Saltaire. With Fire Island native son, Nathaniel Larson, himself heading up the new Danial Gale Fire Island office, this is a feel-good story where everyone closed the deal coming out a winner – and isn’t that what a good real estate transaction is all about?
This issue also features Samantha Salerno’s comprehensive community calendar. If you’re looking for activities to enjoy over Memorial Day Weekend, this is your go-to resource; however, it also includes events beyond the holiday weekend and well into Pride Month.
A word to the wise for all summer event organizers: if you want your event to be considered for publication in an upcoming community calendar of Fire Island News, the best way to do this is to submit it via events.fireislandnews.com. This method will ensure that the event goes live on our website promptly, while providing the event organizer with more direct control over the event content. This is a no-cost service offered courtesy of Schneps Media.
We look forward to having a great summer together!
