NYC THEATRE: “Who’s Holiday!”

“Who’s Holiday!” is a 55 minute piece of silliness, a under cooked, lightweight, comedy skit. It is written by Matthew Lombardo in rhyming couplets.

Remember Cindy Lou Who? She is the 2-year old tot who charms the grinch from stealing Christmas in the Dr. Suess classic,“How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” Whatever became of Cindy Lou? That question is answered by Matthew Lombardo in this holiday offering.

Years have passed and they have not been kind to Cindy Lou. She is now a brassy, sassy, middle aged, liquor swilling, pot smoking, dyed blonde (black roots showing) who now lives in a trailer atop Mount Crumpit, just outside of Whoville. She is preparing to throw a yuletide party for her friends.

Wait a minute before you cross going to see “Who’s Holiday!” off your Christmas list. Cast in this one-woman showcase is Olivier Award winning actress Lesli Margherita and she is sensational. She makes this cotton candy script feel like a rich soufflé. From the very beginning , Lesli is captivating, as she takes the audience in the palm of her hand for a wild ride which she makes a hilarious laugh riot.

The entire design team enhances this production. From the excellent scenic design of David Gallo; to the gloriously gaudy costumes created by Jess Goldstein; the lighting design of Ken Billington and Jonathan Spencer: to the sound design of Bart Fasbender. Special mention to wig designer Charles G LaPointe for his wig design that captures who Cindy Lou is now.

Lesli Margherita is the entire reason for seeing this show. Watching her is like getting a masterclass in great comic acting. Without her, this production would evaporate into thin air.

“Who’s Holiday!” is running through December 31.
