The Kismet Kids Snapper Derby was a big success on August 22, despite the wet weather brought by Hurricane Erin. The rain date was used, pushing everything back by only 24 hours. Fifty-eight children participated. While only two fish were caught on derby day, raffle sponsors, West Marine, the Boatel, Bar Aquatic, Nalu, and beach balls donated by the Agency made all the kids feel like winners. Congratulations to Adam for catching the first-place fish, and Nicholas for second place. The Kismet Inn provided the celebration lunch of hot dogs and fries, and the Kismet Market contributed ice pops.

Oh, the places frosting will go! Cake Wars returned to Ocean Beach on August 19 for its fourth competition. The Ocean Beach Association (OBA) again sponsored this community cake decorating challenge, and this year’s theme was Dr. Seuss. Thirty teams were each given a basic sheet cake and tickets that could be exchanged for frosting and candy toppings. Additional tickets could be had through Seuss trivia knowledge.

Running from the western tip of Fire Island to the eastern tip and back again is 65 miles total. It's not for the casual jogger or the faint of heart. However, Adam Gibbs, Niki Gibbs, Dan Ziluca, and Tim O'Donoghue have been doing it for the past 10 summers.
