The Fire Island Dance Festival returns to Fire Island Pines on July 18 and 19, bringing world-class dance performances to a waterfront stage overlooking the Great South Bay. The annual event combines acclaimed dance performances with the unique setting of Fire Island, drawing audiences together for a weekend of artistry, community, and philanthropy. The festival serves as a fundraiser for Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS that provides support to people affected by HIV/AIDS and other critical health challenges. Leadership and patron ticket packages include cocktails and a DJ party at Whyte Hall. Tickets may be purchased online or in person at the Pines Harbor. The board then discussed the village’s potential contribution to the funding of a Fourth of July fireworks show. The Saltaire Events Organization (SEO) had previously asked the board to donate $5,000 on the condition that the group raise $21,175 to fund a $26,175 show. Carol Hochman, a Saltaire resident and a director of the SEO, shared that the group had nearly reached their goal. As of the May 30 meeting, they had almost raised $20,000. Among the board members, there was much discussion and some disagreement. Trustee Frank Wolf said that he would abstain if this were being voted on. Given the wealth of certain community members, Wolf felt it could be privately funded. Trustee Anna Kovner also disagreed with the proposal and abstained, citing the negative environmental impact of fireworks. Trustee Susan Skerritt supported the proposal, arguing that this year’s holiday holds special significance as our country’s 250th anniversary. Trustee Katie Lihn also supported it, saying, “It's an important one for the community, and the children absolutely love it.”

On April 20, after 18 months of deliberations, the Incorporated Village of Saltaire entered into a 40-year lease with the Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) to manage and operate its public water infrastructure. The motion was unanimously adopted by the Saltaire Village Board of Trustees, and the agreement becomes effective June 1.

It may have been a gray, damp Thursday morning, with shops still busy making final touches as Memorial Day Weekend loomed large on Fire Island, but things felt a little warmer as vibrantly colored editions of Fire Island News (FIN) graced with the cover artwork of Margery Gosnell-Qua were loaded off the water taxi and onto wagons, and delivery rounds were made in Fire Island communities multiple communities including Atlatique, Cherry Grove, Davis Park, Fair Harbor, Fire Island Pines Kismet, Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park, and Saltaire.

An adult male who has worked on Fire Island for many years was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on February 12, according to an anonymous tip recently received by the Schneps Media offices, this publication has learned.

It was a mild and tranquil Christmas Day on Fire Island, as all who stayed here over the holiday can attest. However, after the holiday bliss, residents who live here year-round woke up to no electricity as early as 2 a.m. this morning. The outage appears to extend from the Atlantique community through the western half of Ocean Beach. PSEG Long Island has not responded to our questions about the cause of this outage. Power was restored at approximately 12:15 p.m. Over the past nine hours, affected households used their emergency power generators, if available—those who did not waited it out.

With seven candidates vying for four seats on the Ocean Beach Village Board, this is one of the more competitive races in recent memory. The election is scheduled for June 5 at the Ocean Beach Community House from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
