Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Paper Doll Vintage Boutique has triumphantly reopened at a brand-new location! After last fall’s devastating fire on Main Street that destroyed the original storefront, owner Dominique Maciejka has been steadily rebuilding on Railroad Avenue in Sayville.

Looking out past the back deck, I have spotted these twin fawns several times. Mom drops them off, like at day care, while she forages nearby. I believe she has told them to stay in place because they do not move until she returns, no matter how long it takes.

Ocean Bay Park brought its A-game to a weekend full of purpose, play, and community pride. With fundraising totals soaring and neighborly generosity on full display, Ocean Bay Park once again proved no Fire Island community does it quite like this one.

Weekends are always shorter at the beach; fortunately, our memories are long. That was in evidence at the Davis Park Fire Department's Rock Memorial Ceremony, held annually to commemorate members who had answered their last alarm. Following a blessing by Father Frank, Chief Craig Beane read the names of those who served, including our own dearly departed, as gathered family and friends quietly shared stories.  Please support the Department in their fundraising efforts with a 400 Club Raffle Ticket. You can also inquire about signage for the beautiful new pergola outside the firehouse.

Michael and I attended the 47th Annual Lambda Legal Fundraiser in Fire Island Pines. The reception was held at the home of Matthew Mitchell. Many were in attendance. The party continued Saturday afternoon with a pool party at James Dale and David Lam’s spectacular house on the Ocean. Ken Jennings, CEO of Lambda Legal, spoke powerfully about our government’s revised positions on the gay and trans populations. Lambda work remains essential and relevant. We must support them so they can continue the fight.  In attendance was New York State Assemblyman Tony Simone (District 75, West Side of Manhattan.)

By 1 p.m. this afternoon, Fire Island National Seashore announced beach closures at Watch Hill and Sailors Haven until Saturday, August 23, due to hazardous swimming conditions as Hurricane Erin brews offshore. Further west, the Ocean Beach Village Lifeguard Department called it quits by 3 p.m., after red flag conditions all day, and started dismantling equipment as the ocean surged well ahead of high tide. We have no doubt that Saltaire and Town of Islip Lifeguard departments were doing the same.

A large yellow buoy that floated ashore in Atlantique over the weekend of August 9 has become the most photographed backdrop for beachgoers. Measuring about 14 feet by 6 feet, the bright buoy lay stranded along the high-water line, partially buried in sand.

While walkable downtowns with lively local businesses are certainly attractive, they aren’t always at the top of every buyer’s wish list—at least not based on my experience working across the South Shore market. For many buyers, especially families or those planning to start one, a home within a reputable school district is often the highest priority.

Are buyers prioritizing walkable downtowns and access to local businesses when choosing a neighborhood?

For South Shore of Long Island residents, the Great South Bay (GSB) is a staple in life. It serves as a cultural hub, an important ecological area, and has local economic means. Unfortunately, some people disregard the importance of this remarkable waterway by littering, dumping, and treating it with disrespect. That is where organizations like Operation SPLASH. come into play.
