June has become a special month in the LGBTQ+ community. Here in Cherry Grove, we stay busy all season celebrating Gay Pride.
The calendar for June will offer shows, tributes, tea dances, and our own Gay Pride Parade on June 28.
We must also not forget that the Invasion of the Pines celebrates its 50th anniversary this year on July 4.
Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) President Michael Moran and his board have made elaborate plans for the entire weekend, with extra events in the works.
Recently, Joe Anania performed a workshop production of his new one man show in Manhattan, which he is planning for an October opening.
Asa Somers, last seen on Broadway in Water for Elephants and previously in Dear Evan Hansen, wrote a play, The Boy Who Loved Batman. It had a six-week run at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa. He and his wife Ry Pepper, who is the prop supervisor for Broadway shows BOOP! The Musical, and Call Me Izzy, stopped by Roseland to say hello. Somers’ son, Carpenter, a young performer in the Grove, is now attending the University of New Hampshire.
Congratulations to Adam Rosen, who produced his 13th Night of a Thousand Judy’s on June 2 at Joe’s Pub in New York City, which was a benefit for Callen-Lorde Community Health Center. I was thrilled when he asked me to perform as Rose Levine, along with Bruce Vilanch, Debbie Gravitte, Lea DeLaria, Nathan Lee Graham, Natasha Yvette Williams, and other Broadway and TV personalities. We all know that Judy Garland died on June 22, 1969. Her death was strongly felt by the gay community and still is.
A milestone celebration is due for John Masiello, who is celebrating his 10th year at his Dollhouse cottage in the Grove. His vision was featured on the cover of Fire Island News last summer.
The Art Walk Exhibition in the Grove, sponsored by the Memorial Fund, and created by the Archives Collection of Cherry Grove, is presently featuring photography by koitz through July 6, and can be viewed throughout the Grove neighborhood.
The Cherry Grove Garden Club will hold its annual Garden Tour on July 5. Register at the table in town that day, beginning at 9 a.m.
