It is hard to fathom that Memorial Day’s already come and gone. Just a reminder: while you might not have been ready for an early Memorial Day, you might want to prepare for an early Labor Day.
Right now, we’re marooned in the proto-summer doldrums of June, where, for the next couple of weeks, things will only slowly pick up steam before the explosion of summer. About explosions, plans are underway for our annual fireworks display in August. The Club’s gradually flinging open, camp registration is completed (though you can still get on the waiting list), and it won’t be long before all sorts of festivities are in the air.
The new playground was officially opened at ceremonies held on May 24. The occasion was well-attended, and its participants were well-fed with everything from hors d’oeuvres to ice cream to kid-friendly Prosecco… okay, not quite – though we had enough bottles of the stuff on hand to float a water taxi.
Many thanks to the vendor, APE Studio, who sold us the equipment, the companies who installed it, the incredible Saltaire staff who did so much work on it, and in particular, the people who helped design and guide the project from conception to reality: Jeff Murphy, the man who conceived the layout; Saltaire Citizens Association (SCA) representatives Justine Markus-Sullivan, Allison Williams and Will Obre; Trustees Nat Oppenheimer and Anna Kovner, and of course Mario Posillico. Most importantly, we owe a debt of gratitude to Kathy Shaw, former SCA Chair, who had the original idea, found the manufacturer and championed the project from the get-go.
At the celebration, I said that without Kathy, there’d be no new playground, certainly not the one we now have, and it’s true. But of course, the greatest thanks go to the many generous Saltairians who contributed so much of the funds needed to realize the new facility. Enjoy it for decades to come!
On the subject of generous Saltairians, we have a new courtesy cart, courtesy of a most courteous and public-spirited benefactor, Connie Lawler. Connie knew we needed to replace one of the old carts and unhesitatingly stepped forward to donate the money necessary to purchase a new one, offering a smoother ride for the rider and greater capacity.
The cart is inscribed in honor of Connie and her late and much-missed husband, Andy, and is expected to see a lot of service. So, many thanks to you, Connie! Experience for yourself a quick and quiet ride chauffeured by Saltaire law enforcement in the Saltaire Lawlermobile… but remember, only if you’re eligible because of age or infirmity. Connie will be watching.
