Our hectic summer schedule has begun. The Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) kicked off the season with its opening-season party, featuring four exceptionally smart and talented contestants who ran for Homecoming Queen: Champagne Bubbles, Ivy Stalls, Violet Tide, and Flagarina.

June 5 West Islip Symphony Orchestra Spring Concert (8 p.m.) The West Islip Symphony Orchestra will perform America: A Story in Three Acts, under conductor Paul Little at Beach Street Middle School, 17 Beach St, West Islip, at 8 p.m. The concert will bring together the sounds across America’s history. The concert will include three parts: The Old West, The Big City, and America’s True Voice, each highlighting an influential aspect of America. Joining the orchestra is world-renowned harmonica virtuoso Jiayi He. Tickets are $10 for guests and free for students.

June is Pride Month, and we celebrate it here with reverence. Its roots lie in safe havens such as Fire Island, Provincetown, San Francisco and New York City. Now, villages and hamlets across Long Island, including Babylon, Sayville, and Patchogue, also hold parades, film festivals, and other social gatherings to keep the dialogue going strong. We are not in Kansas anymore.

It may have been a gray, damp Thursday morning, with shops still busy making final touches as Memorial Day Weekend loomed large on Fire Island, but things felt a little warmer as vibrantly colored editions of Fire Island News (FIN) graced with the cover artwork of Margery Gosnell-Qua were loaded off the water taxi and onto wagons, and delivery rounds were made in Fire Island communities multiple communities including Atlatique, Cherry Grove, Davis Park, Fair Harbor, Fire Island Pines Kismet, Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park, and Saltaire.

2026 is a mayoral election year for the Incorporated Village of Ocean Beach. With seven candidates vying for four seats on the Ocean Beach Village Board, this is one of the more competitive races in recent memory. Almost 10 months after downtown being ravaged by fire, Paper Doll Vintage Boutique is set to reopen in the heart of Sayville. Its new location is at 106 Railroad Avenue, and its reopen date is August 16. Since first opening in 2012, the boutique has become a Long Island institution—outfitting shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, supplying vintage pieces to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and A24, being featured in The New Yorker, and winning Best of Long Island 12 times since 2013.
