We spoke with the owners of several new businesses that will be opening for the first time this season or have recently opened.

It may have been a gray, damp Thursday morning, with shops still busy making final touches as Memorial Day Weekend loomed large on Fire Island, but things felt a little warmer as vibrantly colored editions of Fire Island News (FIN) graced with the cover artwork of Margery Gosnell-Qua were loaded off the water taxi and onto wagons, and delivery rounds were made in Fire Island communities multiple communities including Atlatique, Cherry Grove, Davis Park, Fair Harbor, Fire Island Pines Kismet, Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park, and Saltaire.

2026 is a mayoral election year for the Incorporated Village of Ocean Beach. With seven candidates vying for four seats on the Ocean Beach Village Board, this is one of the more competitive races in recent memory. The election is scheduled for June 5 at the Ocean Beach Community House from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Castles are judged based on detail and creativity. You get a plot of beach and get to build anything. Drinks and water will be available.

Fire Island News Closes Out 2025 Summer Season with Labor Day Weekend Edition

Weekends are always shorter at the beach; fortunately, our memories are long. That was in evidence at the Davis Park Fire Department's Rock Memorial Ceremony, held annually to commemorate members who had answered their last alarm. Following a blessing by Father Frank, Chief Craig Beane read the names of those who served, including our own dearly departed, as gathered family and friends quietly shared stories. Please support the Department in their fundraising efforts with a 400 Club Raffle Ticket. You can also inquire about signage for the beautiful new pergola outside the firehouse.

Summer tunes are in the air and making a splash in our July 18 edition of Fire Island News. Glyn Emmerson writes about the bands that jammed in Kismet and Atlantique over the July 4th Weekend. Robert Levine covered the world-class opera singer who recently performed at Whyte Hall in Fire Island Pines. Then, Rob Verbeck ventured out with his camera to catch the action at Alive After Five in downtown Patchogue. The music continues over the weekend of July 24 as the Great South Bay Music Festival comes back for its 17th summer in Shorefront Park in Patchogue Village. Omar Drissi gives us a rundown of what to expect for this upcoming crown jewel event in the Long Island music calendar.
