Ocean Bay Park continues to hit its summer stride with a flurry of fun events and heartfelt moments that show why this community is so special. From glitter-filled celebrations to waterfront gatherings and poignant farewells, there’s something for everyone—and everyone is welcome.
The OBP Auxiliary’s annual Belmont Stakes Party brought neighbors together at the firehouse for a relaxed afternoon of racing fun. With the sun shining and the bay breeze blowing, guests enjoyed beer, wine, and light nibbles on the firehouse deck. A highlight of the day was the 50/50 raffle, won by longtime resident Karen Kee, who generously donated half her winnings back to support the firehouse. Cheers, Karen!
Just down the block, the Schooner Inn hosted its always-popular Pride Party, a joyful celebration of love, identity, and inclusivity. DJ Just Joe kept the crowd moving, while guests posed for snapshots in a photo booth decked out with wigs, boas, and outrageous accessories. Fabulous drag queens Jizzabella and Victoria Falls lit up the afternoon with show-stopping performances before emceeing the amateur drag contest. The winner? OBP’s own Angelo Sakonas, who slayed the competition and walked away with the crown. Werk!
On Saturday, June 28, art lovers can stop by Fran Miller’s Art Show from 1 to 5 p.m., where local talent will be showcased. It’s a wonderful opportunity to support Fire Island artists and bring a piece of their creativity into your home.
OBP Community Events has launched a Summer Book Club, a Mahjong Club, and a Garden Club, with additional gatherings planned throughout the season. Interested residents can email obpcommunityfun@gmail.com to join in.
That same evening, June 28 at 6 p.m., neighbors are invited to a casual beach meet-and-greet next to the firehouse. Bring your favorite drink, something to share, and enjoy the bay breeze as you connect with new homeowners and old friends alike.
In cultural news, Ocean Bay Park proudly nods to longtime summer resident James Grashow, whose life and work are the subject of a new documentary, Jimmy and the Demons, which just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Directed by Cindy Meehl, the film follows the sculptor’s four-year journey creating The Cathedral, a five-foot wooden masterpiece of Christ carrying a Renaissance cathedral while demons claw at him. As Jimmy wrestles with age, art, and meaning, the film becomes a moving portrait of creativity, devotion, and perseverance—one demon at a time. It’s also a tender homage to his enduring love story with his wife, Guzzy.
And finally, a toast to Andrea Papapetros, a cherished member of our OBP family. Raised in a cottage on Michigan and Traffic Walks, built by her parents, Marjorie and Leon Auerpach, Papapetros and her husband Nick raised four amazing kids here. Her warmth, laughter, and legacy will echo through the porches and paths of Ocean Bay Park for years to come.
Here’s to more sun, sparkle, and unforgettable OBP moments. Bring your floaties and flair—summer’s just getting started.
