Memorial Day weekend never fails to deliver in Ocean Bay Park. It’s that cherished time when familiar faces return, laughter fills the air, and the community comes alive once again. This year was no different. Friends reunited, new memories were made, and the weekend warriors made their annual pilgrimage down to Flynn’s Fire Island and the Schooner Inn, signaling the arrival of fun-seekers in full force.

Both Flynn’s Fire Island and the Schooner Inn were packed all weekend, hosting crowds eager for good times and great music. The energy was high, the weather mostly pleasant, and the mood celebratory. The less-prepared visitors—those caught off guard by cool beach breezes—quickly became fans of the Ocean Bay Park Association (OBPA) merchandise table, where beach towels, T-shirts, long-sleeved athletic tops, and cozy hooded sweatshirts were in high demand. All proceeds benefit the community, making style and support a perfect match.

But amidst the festivities, the weekend was not without drama. Late Saturday night, a fire erupted in the Pines. The Ocean Bay Park Volunteer Fire Department, along with neighboring departments, responded quickly and bravely. Although the home was sadly lost, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the responding units, no injuries occurred, and the blaze was successfully contained – preventing what could have been a far more devastating outcome.

In true Fire Island spirit, the community eagerly stepped up afterward. Karen Swinsky led another of her remarkable cleanup efforts, rallying a dedicated team of volunteers to clear debris and restore order. It served as a reminder of how connected and caring our community truly is. Keep an eye out for the next cleanup date—it’s a fantastic opportunity to give back and meet your neighbors.

Looking ahead, summer fun is just getting started. Please stop by the firehouse when the OBP FD Auxiliary hosts its annual Belmont Stakes Party at the firehouse on Saturday, June 7. It’s always a lively affair, featuring good food, great company, and an opportunity to support our hardworking volunteer fire department.

Then head over to the Schooner Inn’s Pride Party on Sunday – a vibrant celebration of love and inclusivity. This year’s event will feature a DJ dance party, live entertainers, a photo booth, giveaways, and the ever-popular runway contest. It serves as a joyful reminder that Ocean Bay Park is not just a destination, but a community that welcomes everyone. See you on the dance floor! BYO
