June is Pride Month, and we celebrate it here with reverence. Its roots lie in safe havens such as Fire Island, Provincetown, San Francisco and New York City. Now, villages and hamlets across Long Island, including Babylon, Sayville, and Patchogue, also hold parades, film festivals, and other social gatherings to keep the dialogue going strong. We are not in Kansas anymore.

I painted my sensory experiences, discovering ways to express the dynamic coastal environment. In 2020, I painted a watercolor study of the boys up in the lifeguard stand. Although the people around me were in my line of sight, I altered some figures to provide a variety of archetypes, mindful of including people of different genders, ages, and ethnicities. The directional paint strokes are dynamic forces on the surface and into the third dimension. They suggest changes in wind and heat that carry light through the humid atmosphere. The paint texture has a direction that one feels at their center of gravity as beachgoers interact and the surf crashes ashore. The colors are descriptive while also expressive. The back of the figure in the foreground contains pink, orange, and red. White describes reflected light off the burning sand and highlights on skin rich with sunscreen and perspiration.

It may have been a gray, damp Thursday morning, with shops still busy making final touches as Memorial Day Weekend loomed large on Fire Island, but things felt a little warmer as vibrantly colored editions of Fire Island News (FIN) graced with the cover artwork of Margery Gosnell-Qua were loaded off the water taxi and onto wagons, and delivery rounds were made in Fire Island communities multiple communities including Atlatique, Cherry Grove, Davis Park, Fair Harbor, Fire Island Pines Kismet, Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park, and Saltaire.

Christopher Verga, an American history instructor at Suffolk Community College, a reporter with Schneps Media, and a Bay Shore resident, has authored several books previously reviewed in this publication. They include Saving Fire Island from Robert Moses, coauthored with Neil Buffett; and Cold War Long Island, coauthored with award-winning journalist Karl Grossman (also a frequent Schneps Media contributor), who provides the foreword to Verga’s new release, Nazis of Long Island.

Joyously, we have removed the ribbon of the Israeli flag with the headline "Bring the Hostages Home" from our front covers. We are happy to celebrate the return of all hostages, although the bodies of some of the deceased have yet to be returned.

Fire Island News Closes Out 2025 Summer Season with Labor Day Weekend Edition

The Fire Island Lifeguard Tournament is always a favorite event to cover. Still, this year, Ocean Beach Police Officer Andrew Becher sent us something a little different – a view from above. A licensed and talented drone operator, Becher's photographs have won Fire Island News journalism awards in past years, and he may do so again, as he caught all the action from a different perspective. This year, the Golden Torpe went to the Town of Islip, a machine that is hard to beat, but Ocean Beach and Saltaire Village have taken home their share over the past summers for sure. The skills of all these brave men and women are evenly matched, making for a competitive and close match every time. It's a sport developed in the interests of saving lives along the water. Congratulations to all!
