The image on the cover of this issue of Fire Island News is a classic South Shore Long Island bay house—a pen-and-ink with watercolor rendition of a familiar site that Great South Bay boaters and ferry riders see all the time. The charming cottages that dot the islets in the bay are full of wonder and intrigue. Artist Michael White fondly recalled visiting the South Shore beaches with his parents in his youth:

Perhaps it is just a coincidence that the colorful floral artwork on the cover of our July 17 edition of Fire Island News is named Lori Bloom—then again, maybe it isn't! Active on Fire Island both artistically and civically, she is part of a two-person art exhibition at the Ocean Beach Historical Society, opening July 18 and running through August 9. This is her story.

While there is always great excitement and investment in our July 4 Weekend issue of Fire Island News, the fun really begins in the issue that follows. So much so that this issue practically wrote itself. Here you’ll find all the fun pictures, and our community columnists recap all the action. However, this is not just an issue about what was; it's also about all the great things still ahead for the summer of 2026.

In her artist statement, Marlene Weinstein writes: “This hanging assemblage reflects the beauty and fragility of freedom. The fifty sun‑printed cyanotypes embody the serenity and joy that freedom makes possible, while the collaged stripes echo our long, imperfect, and ongoing pursuit of liberty. Each fragment is pinned in place with the most delicate of connections, suggesting how easily these ideals can fray. Freedom survives because we choose, again and again, to protect the ideals that hold it together.”

This Father’s Day falls on the First Day of Summer. It’s been a few years since that last happened, and because this issue also coincides with the Juneteenth holiday, we pause to consider the convergence of these events. Fathers, because we all have one, and sometimes more. The role they play in our lives charts our course. Juneteenth, because freedom is essential for all of us to thrive. And the first day of summer, because our lives revolve around the sun, as these warmer days are always the brightest and most fleeting.
