When artist Rosi Barry passed away in May 2025, she left behind a large body of work—photographs, paintings, and sketches—full of beauty, natural wonder, and whimsy. She also left behind a community of artists who loved her and her work and wanted to pay tribute to her in the best way they could.

Opening Friday, May 1 Awakenings The BAFFA Art Gallery will feature a multi-media exhibit by Women Sharing Art in May. The exhibit includes painting, photography, mosaics, sculpture, fiber arts, and mixed media. “Awakenings explores moments of transformation, discovery, and renewed awareness.” The show can be viewed at the Gallery, Thursdays through Sundays, from Noon to 4:00 p.m. An artists’ reception and awards for students whose work was exhibited at the student art show will take place on May 2 from 1 - 4 PMp.m. The BAFFA Gallery is located in the historic Gillette House at 47 Gillette Avenue in Sayville. In honor of Earth Day, second-grade students at the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in Sayville, part of the Connetquot Central School District, participated in the Our Living Planet experience: an interactive educational program featuring a massive inflatable Earth balloon. Students stepped inside the 19-foot-tall sphere, which displays true-to-scale satellite imagery of the planet. Looking at the outside and inside of the balloon, students explored a range of topics, including geography, climate and animal life, offering them a unique, immersive look at Earth’s systems.

Lectures at Long Island Maritime Museum: Demystifying Jaws—A Decade of Shark Research and Conservation in Coastal New York Please join us as we welcome Dr. Oliver Shipley, Assistant Professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University. His talk will summarize ten years of shark research conducted by Stony Brook University in coastal New York. Dr. Shipley will discuss cutting-edge technologies being used to uncover the secret lives of sharks and how they are likely to respond to emerging threats such as ocean warming and the development of offshore infrastructure. On April 18, music fans will line up outside Buddha Belly Records in Sayville before sunrise, hoping to get their hands on rare vinyl releases available for just one day each year. Record Store Day is an annual event, first held in 2008, to honor independent record stores and their culture. The event focuses on exclusive vinyl releases made specifically for that day and only available at brick-and-mortar record shops. Owner Michael Gerhardt is preparing for what he expects will be one of the busiest days of the year. Doors will open at 8 a.m., and customers can buy limited-edition records on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition to the exclusive releases, the store plans to host live music, raffles, and giveaways.

Friday, March 27 Guardians of the Water: Long Island’s Water Keepers Join Save The Great South Bay for a regional conversation featuring the Waterkeepers who serve as independent guardians of Long Island’s waterways. We will formally welcome Andy Mirchel as the newly appointed Long Island South Shore Waterkeeper, protecting the South Shore from Eastern Great South Bay to Jamaica Bay as a full-time advocate for clean, swimmable, and fishable waters. Andy will be joined by fellow Waterkeepers from across Long Island, united through the Waterkeeper Alliance — a global network of more than 300 advocates working to safeguard our bays, estuaries, and coastal communities. Moderated by the Long Island Association, this discussion will explore the biggest threats facing our waters — from nitrogen pollution and aging infrastructure to climate change — and what must happen next.
