Before Fire Island, on one hazy 1960s summer, at a Girl Scout Camp on Long Island, a young Meryl Meisler hears whispers of a mystical realm just across the bay. On this island, they say, “fairies ran about naked and lived in little houses with charming names like Shirley’s Temple.” This opening vignette — shared by a now-renowned, longtime photographer of queer New York nightlife — sets the tone for John Dempsey’s ambitious account of Fire Island’s art history.

Saturday, June 20 Bromley Caldari House Tour (1-4 p.m.) The Fire Island Pines Historical Society will host the Bromley Caldari House Tour on Saturday, June 20, from 1 to 4 p.m., offering a rare opportunity to step inside seven notable Fire Island Pines homes designed by renowned architects Scott Bromley and Jerry Caldari. Known for helping shape the distinctive architectural character of the Pines, Bromley Caldari’s work has influenced some of the community’s most recognizable modern homes. You’ll receive a map for a self-guided tour, and along the way, attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy a “Margarita from Hell” at 519 Porgie Walk. Tickets are $40 per person. Communities across Long Island will mark the occasion with educational programs, cultural events, performances, and celebrations honoring the day's significance.

June 5 West Islip Symphony Orchestra Spring Concert (8 p.m.) The West Islip Symphony Orchestra will perform America: A Story in Three Acts, under conductor Paul Little at Beach Street Middle School, 17 Beach St, West Islip, at 8 p.m. The concert will bring together the sounds across America’s history. The concert will include three parts: The Old West, The Big City, and America’s True Voice, each highlighting an influential aspect of America. Joining the orchestra is world-renowned harmonica virtuoso Jiayi He. Tickets are $10 for guests and free for students.
