Patchogue’s Sandspit Lighthouse looks spiffy now, with a ramp and side railings so visitors and residents can meander and enjoy the view. However, most people are unaware of its long history of starts and stops. “The original one was a WPA project along with the rock pile,” said Matt Sherman, owner of the Davis Park Ferry Company, along with his sister-in-law Stephanie Sherman. (The WPA—Works Progress Administration—was a New Deal agency established in 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression. It employed millions of people who were out of work.)

When it comes to current elder statesman blues guitarists, Jimmie Vaughan doesn’t get mentioned nearly enough. While his late baby brother Stevie Ray Vaughan may have gotten much of the commercial success thanks to his game-changing style of playing that oftentimes cast him as a latter-day Hendrix, Vaughan’s younger sibling often cited him as the better guitar player. And while Vaughan may be in the shadow of fellow living greats like Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Clark, Jr., Susan Tedeschi, and Derek Trucks, the humble 74-year-old Texas guitar-slinger has carved out his own legacy.

Seatuck Environmental Association educator Taylor Larson, along with colleagues Sacha Koulakova and Liam Denison, was gently scrubbing biofouling off spat, or baby oysters, growing on discarded shells on a table at Patchogue’s Mascot Dock. A light breeze rippled the water as walkers strolled by, some asking questions. Koulakova explained their process to a woman who had stopped.

On June 26, Robert Eccleston appeared before the Ocean Beach Village Justice Court in shackles and chains, escorted by Suffolk County Sheriffs to answer for an outstanding bench warrant dating back to 2010. Eccleston is among 13 people arrested in connection with the East Patchogue missing teen case, which kept Long Islanders along the Great South Bay riveted to news reports throughout the winter of 2024/25 as sordid details about her disappearance in December continued to unfold. She was found on January 3 in a boat moored at Islip Hamlet’s Whitecap Marina.

Robert Levine covered the world-class opera singer who recently performed at Whyte Hall in Fire Island Pines. The music continues over the weekend of July 24 as the Great South Bay Music Festival comes back for its 17th summer in Shorefront Park in Patchogue Village. Omar Drissi gives us a rundown of what to expect for this upcoming crown jewel event in the Long Island music calendar.
