Over a foot of snow possible for Long Island

Excitement was in the air as over 900 Girl Scouts descended upon South Shore Mall on the evening of Jan. 16 to kick off the 2026 cookie season. Activities included a “Girl Scouts Got Talent” show, where finalists performed their own original Girl Scout Cookie songs, along with cookie previews and creative snacks. Girl Scouts also created their own original social media content as part of the “Media Girls” program.

Thursday, January 29 Disney’s “Newsies” Opening Night Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical comes to the Argyle Theatre in Babylon Village, 34 West Main Street, Babylon, with showtimes running through March 22. Choreographed by Trent Soyster, directed by Tommy Ranieri, and under the musical direction of Jonathan Brenner, this turn-of-the-century classic is a spectacular adaptation of the Broadway musical. Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) has announced that professional sharpshooters will be deployed to the grounds surrounding the William Floyd Estate in Mastic Beach and National Park Service (NPS) tracks  (including but not limited to Watch Hill, the Sunken Forest, and Fire Island Lighthouse) on Fire Island proper, as they commence their eighth winter of deer culling operations for the remainder of this month.

Hunter, who is not a bad kid, but he does like to bully other students. He gets a taste of his own medicine when he returns to school in a dream to find that everyone has become a zombie, and he is now the outcast. This is a heartfelt and funny play that teaches a valuable lesson about friends and belonging. The play by Roger Emerson and John Jacobson will be performed live one night only by the students of Woodhull Elementary School. Refreshments will follow. The play is free, but reservations are requested by calling 631-583-5626.

  • On Sundays in 1962, television host Chuck McCann, would read the New York Sunday News, which featured the cartoon character Little Orphan Annie. He wore white circular discs over his eyes to portray Annie as he read the comic strip aloud. Such an oddity to me back then, those discs affixed to the eyes scared me. It even led me to dislike the Little Orphan Annie comic strip.
