Kawaii Art Workshop Saturday, August 8 (11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.) Kids can explore the playful world of Kawaii art during a beginner-friendly workshop hosted by the Islip Arts Council on Saturday, August 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The one-hour class will introduce young artists to the fundamentals of Kawaii-style drawing, including color, shapes, shading, and technique. Students will learn how to create adorable Kawaii-style animals and objects while building the skills needed for further study of the art form. The class costs $25 and will take place at the Islip Arts Council’s Offices & Gallery at South Shore Mall in Bay Shore, next to Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Weekly in August on Thursday and Saturday (9 a.m.-2 p.m.) NY State Parks Shark Shack Sharks are an extremely diverse group of animals on the planet, yet they’re also among the most feared. In this hands-on program at Robert Moses Field 5, near the playground (weather permitting), patrons will learn that this group of fish is full of diversity! The Shark Shack is meant to educate the public about the shark species native to New York while also introducing other marine life in our waters and how to guide a shark interaction. Experience the pop-up display full of shark-related items, turning what once was fear into fascination! This event is FREE to attend. Tuesday, May 19 (7-9 p.m.) STAR SPANGLED CONCERT: Honoring our Nation’s 250th Anniversary Enjoy a special evening of music, remembrance, and celebration as we honor America’s 250th Anniversary and pay tribute to U.S. Navy SEALs and all veterans on Tuesday, May 19, as the North Shore Community Band performs against the backdrop of the museum and the legacy it represents. Raffles and lite snacks are available. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., the concert begins at 7 p.m. The LT Michael P. Opening Friday, May 1 Awakenings The BAFFA Art Gallery will feature a multi-media exhibit by Women Sharing Art in May. The exhibit includes painting, photography, mosaics, sculpture, fiber arts, and mixed media. “Awakenings explores moments of transformation, discovery, and renewed awareness.” The show can be viewed at the Gallery, Thursdays through Sundays, from Noon to 4:00 p.m. An artists’ reception and awards for students whose work was exhibited at the student art show will take place on May 2 from 1 - 4 PMp.m. The BAFFA Gallery is located in the historic Gillette House at 47 Gillette Avenue in Sayville. Saturday, April 25 (9-11 a.m.) Creek Defender Community Clean-Up with Save The Great South Bay Swan River & Mud Creek, East Patchogue: Caring for the Great South Bay begins on the land. Improve the quality of the water entering our bay by removing litter, debris, and invasive species through a group volunteer effort! Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience or age, to participate. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Clean-up gear will be provided. Meet at Pine Neck Boat Launch. Please wear eye protection, long sleeves, and pants; sturdy, water-resistant boots are recommended.

Lectures at Long Island Maritime Museum: Demystifying Jaws—A Decade of Shark Research and Conservation in Coastal New York Please join us as we welcome Dr. Oliver Shipley, Assistant Professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University. His talk will summarize ten years of shark research conducted by Stony Brook University in coastal New York. Dr. Shipley will discuss cutting-edge technologies being used to uncover the secret lives of sharks and how they are likely to respond to emerging threats such as ocean warming and the development of offshore infrastructure. Friday, March 27 Guardians of the Water: Long Island’s Water Keepers Join Save The Great South Bay for a regional conversation featuring the Waterkeepers who serve as independent guardians of Long Island’s waterways. We will formally welcome Andy Mirchel as the newly appointed Long Island South Shore Waterkeeper, protecting the South Shore from Eastern Great South Bay to Jamaica Bay as a full-time advocate for clean, swimmable, and fishable waters. Andy will be joined by fellow Waterkeepers from across Long Island, united through the Waterkeeper Alliance — a global network of more than 300 advocates working to safeguard our bays, estuaries, and coastal communities. Moderated by the Long Island Association, this discussion will explore the biggest threats facing our waters — from nitrogen pollution and aging infrastructure to climate change — and what must happen next.
