It may have been a gray, damp Thursday morning, with shops still busy making final touches as Memorial Day Weekend loomed large on Fire Island, but things felt a little warmer as vibrantly colored editions of Fire Island News (FIN) graced with the cover artwork of Margery Gosnell-Qua were loaded off the water taxi and onto wagons, and delivery rounds were made in Fire Island communities multiple communities including Atlatique, Cherry Grove, Davis Park, Fair Harbor, Fire Island Pines Kismet, Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park, and Saltaire.

Ocean Beach village residents have been closely watching what has become a competitive mayoral and trustee election. However, a surprise came out of left field when the Village Court Justice race heated up in recent weeks, bringing both candidates into a Riverhead courtroom and reopening a perennial question about election law and residents’ legitimacy in the history of this incorporated village on Fire Island.

Tuesday, May 19 (7-9 p.m.) STAR SPANGLED CONCERT: Honoring our Nation’s 250th Anniversary Enjoy a special evening of music, remembrance, and celebration as we honor America’s 250th Anniversary and pay tribute to U.S. Navy SEALs and all veterans on Tuesday, May 19, as the North Shore Community Band performs against the backdrop of the museum and the legacy it represents. Raffles and lite snacks are available. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., the concert begins at 7 p.m. The LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum is located at 50 West Ave. in West Sayville.

The structural blaze on Fire Island that consumed a bayfront house and seriously damaged another on Friday afternoon, April 24, caught regional attention, with black smoke visible for miles along and across the bay, and news station helicopters circling above Ocean Beach long after the smoke had cleared.

What appeared to be a structure fire on Fire Island, in the community of Ocean Beach, became apparent at about 3:30 this afternoon, when black, billowing smoke caught the attention of onlookers in the village square and boaters on the Great South Bay. Ocean Beach Fire alarms sounded at approximately 3:15 p.m. Bystanders reported the location as being the bayside of Wilmot Road. The cause at this time is unknown. This is a story in development.

Mayor James S. Mallott is running for another four-year term as mayor of the Village of Ocean Beach and will be challenged by Village Trustee Ian Levine. Both Mallott and Levine were among the candidates for elected office who participated in the Ocean Beach Association’s (OBA) annual winter meeting on March 24, held on Zoom.

It was a mild and tranquil Christmas Day on Fire Island, as all who stayed here over the holiday can attest. However, after the holiday bliss, residents who live here year-round woke up to no electricity as early as 2 a.m. this morning. The outage appears to extend from the Atlantique community through the western half of Ocean Beach. PSEG Long Island has not responded to our questions about the cause of this outage. Power was restored at approximately 12:15 p.m. Over the past nine hours, affected households used their emergency power generators, if available—those who did not waited it out.

Kismet Coffee, previously located next to Fire Island Vines in Bay Shore, has now opened a new, expanded location a few stores away at 45 W. Main St. The original Kismet Coffee opened as a coffee stand in 2022 by Jackson Davis in the namesake Fire Island community, where he grew up, by the Kismet ferry terminal. In 2024, they opened their kiosk inside Ocean Beach Trading.
