Bill Bleyer's latest book is about the Roosevelt family. The Pulitzer Prize-winning and Press Club Long Island Journalist Hall of Fame winner, and resident of Bayville, has written numerous books about Long Island. They include George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring and Fire Island Light House, reviewed in this newspaper. His latest tome, The Roosevelts in New York City, introduces readers to the family members noted and those lesser known, their personal lives and “private interactions” as interesting as the places in which they “lived, worked and worshiped.”

Sunday, October 12 Fall Festival & Mourning at the Manor Reel in the fall with a day of activities at Sagtikos Manor, 677 West Montauk Highway, Bay Shore, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Enjoy craft demonstrators, sheep shearing, children’s activities, a puppet show, live music, and food vendors. Town of Islip's Annual SeaFest was held at Bay Shore Marina, which was an ideal setting for Great South Bay area favorite, now in its seventh year. Festival attendees of all ages enjoyed food trucks, craft beer, pony rides, a petting zoo, beach games, and fun on the stunning Great South Bay, along with dozens of vendors selling handcrafted items and gifts. Live music from guest band J Haus kept the celebration lively, and visitors could dance the whole day without worries, as the Town offered free parking and admission.

Everybody loves a feel-good success story about a local business. Along the Great South Bay of Long Island, that reigns even more true. Toasted Oysters, a local oyster farm operating from Islip, has been selected to showcase their authentic Blue Point oysters, which are grown right here on the South Shore of Long Island, at the 2025 Ryder Cup. The star-studded, highly anticipated golf match will be held at the Bethpage Black Golf Course in Farmingdale from September 23 to 28.

For Mary Gauthier, songwriting goes way beyond conveying her thoughts and emotions. It was also a lifeline when she embraced sobriety back in 1990. Songwriting’s appeal was important enough for Gauthier to swap being an acclaimed chef at a wildly successful Cajun restaurant in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood to head to Nashville in her mid-thirties to pursue a dream of becoming a professional musician. Fast forward to the present day, and the 63-year-old singer-songwriter is touring with partner Jaimee Harris and not only celebrating the 25-year-plus anniversary of Gauthier’s 1999 sophomore bow, Drag Queens in Limousines, but also giving love to her most recent studio effort, 2022’s Dark Enough to See the Stars. Her love of compositional craft will be on full display when she and Harris roll into Bayport on September 26.
