Christmas is Done, But the Fun’s Just Begun! Late December /Early January Things to Do Over Holiday Break Along the Great South Bay

Posted on December 26, 2025
It was a mild and tranquil Christmas Day on Fire Island, as all who stayed here over the holiday can attest. However, after the holiday bliss, residents who live here year-round woke up to no electricity as early as 2 a.m. this morning. The outage appears to extend from the Atlantique community through the western half of Ocean Beach. PSEG Long Island has not responded to our questions about the cause of this outage. Power was restored at approximately 12:15 p.m.  Over the past nine hours, affected households used their emergency power generators, if available—those who did not waited it out.

Downtown Islip’s Harp & Hound remains closed after a damaging fire last month, which is a severe loss for the local business during the holiday season. It has affected the family-owned Irish-American pub's revenue, resulted in lost wages for staff, and deprived patrons of a popular gathering spot.

  • The creator of The Happy Elf is none other than Harry Connick Jr.  (born September 11, 1967), an American singer, pianist, composer, actor, and former television host. As of 2019, he has sold over 30 million records worldwide. Connick's best-selling album in the United States is his Christmas album When My Heart Finds Christmas (1993). • On Sundays in 1962, television host Chuck McCann, would read the New York Sunday News, which featured the cartoon character Little Orphan Annie. He wore white circular discs over his eyes to portray Annie as he read the comic strip aloud. Such an oddity to me back then, those discs affixed to the eyes scared me. It even led me to dislike the Little Orphan Annie comic strip. However, seeing the production of Annie at the Argyle Theatre, directed by Valerie Wright, completely changed my mindset. “Annie” at Babylon’s Argyle Theatre
