Bill Bleyer's latest book is about the Roosevelt family. The Pulitzer Prize-winning and Press Club Long Island Journalist Hall of Fame winner, and resident of Bayville, has written numerous books about Long Island. They include George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring and Fire Island Light House, reviewed in this newspaper. His latest tome, The Roosevelts in New York City, introduces readers to the family members noted and those lesser known, their personal lives and “private interactions” as interesting as the places in which they “lived, worked and worshiped.”

In July, I had the honor of being invited to Edith Mendelsohn's hundredth birthday celebration. While interviewing our Fire Island centenarian population is always important, this was a rare opportunity for our Behind the Dunes section. Mendelsohn built a livelihood around the Fire Island real estate market and has a lifetime of knowledge to share.

The wildlife rehabilitation organization based in Smithtown visited the Great South Bay on September 16 to assist a barn owl that had become trapped in the Fire Island Light Tower. The bird of prey sought refuge in one of the carved windows along the shaft of the lighthouse tower —possibly in search of a nesting site, according to Sweetbrier’s report on social media—when it became trapped behind wire fencing, which has surrounded the tower for more than a year as repairs to the lighthouse remain unfinished.

  • The Lunar New Year (also called Chinese New Year) is upon us and generally falls between January 21 and February 20. This year, it falls on February 17. It is celebrated throughout China, Taiwan, North and South Korea, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The holiday honors ancestors and deities, encourages letting go of negative energy, and emphasizes connecting with family and friends. It is a prominent celebration in vibrant Chinatowns and Asian communities across the country, featuring parades and other festive activities. This year marks the Year of the Horse, symbolizing hard work, bravery, and resilience—values universal to all. Food plays a significant role in Lunar New Year celebrations, with various culinary traditions across regions each assigning specific meanings to different dishes. Long Island offers many restaurants to enjoy these celebrations and discover new favorites. Culinary Delights for the Lunar New Year 2026: Year of the Horse
