Michael and I attended the 47th Annual Lambda Legal Fundraiser in Fire Island Pines. The reception was held at the home of Matthew Mitchell. Many were in attendance. The party continued Saturday afternoon with a pool party at James Dale and David Lam’s spectacular house on the Ocean. Ken Jennings, CEO of Lambda Legal, spoke powerfully about our government’s revised positions on the gay and trans populations. Lambda work remains essential and relevant. We must support them so they can continue the fight. In attendance was New York State Assemblyman Tony Simone (District 75, West Side of Manhattan.)

By 1 p.m. this afternoon, Fire Island National Seashore announced beach closures at Watch Hill and Sailors Haven until Saturday, August 23, due to hazardous swimming conditions as Hurricane Erin brews offshore. Further west, the Ocean Beach Village Lifeguard Department called it quits by 3 p.m., after red flag conditions all day, and started dismantling equipment as the ocean surged well ahead of high tide. We have no doubt that Saltaire and Town of Islip Lifeguard departments were doing the same.

A large yellow buoy that floated ashore in Atlantique over the weekend of August 9 has become the most photographed backdrop for beachgoers. Measuring about 14 feet by 6 feet, the bright buoy lay stranded along the high-water line, partially buried in sand.

Marking the end of summer is the annual Hampton Classic Horse Show. The current show has grown into one of the largest horse events in the United States. It features the top equestrians from around the world, with over 1,400 horses competing in more than 200 events. The total prize money for the high-stakes competitions is just under a million dollars.

On Fire Island's sandy outer beach of Smith Point Beach in Shirley, 18-year-old Alexander Murphy, of Sayville, was arrested by Suffolk County Police after stabbing a 17-year-old minor with a knife, shortly after 6 p.m. on the evening of August 16.

Ocean Beach transformed into a sea of purpose and remembrance on Sunday, July 27, as more than 900 people gathered for the third annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk on Fire Island. What began in 2022 as a small local fundraiser has grown into a major community event and official race in the national Tunnel to Towers Run, Walk & Climb Series. This year, it raised over $70,000 for the foundation, which honors fallen FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller by supporting first responders, veterans, and their families.

Almost 10 months after downtown being ravaged by fire, Paper Doll Vintage Boutique is set to reopen in the heart of Sayville. Its new location is at 106 Railroad Avenue, and its reopen date is August 16. Since first opening in 2012, the boutique has become a Long Island institution—outfitting shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, supplying vintage pieces to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and A24, being featured in The New Yorker, and winning Best of Long Island 12 times since 2013.
