Keith Snedecor was scheduled to give a lecture about the history of the South Side Sportsmen’s Club in late June. The Historical Society of Islip Hamlet was excited to host it, and I had planned to assign a correspondent to cover the talk. The subject was interesting, and the promotional materials displayed a picture of his warm, friendly face. The heart attack that took him on May 11, at the age of 62, shook the South Shore Long Island historical community.

Fire Island Lighthouse was suddenly closed to the public around 2 p.m. today. Rumors spread that someone jumped from the lighthouse, resulting in a fatality. New 12 confirms that the West Islip Fire Department was called to respond to a fall. Calls to officials at the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society are currently not being returned. This is an ongoing story, and updates will be shared when more information is available.

Suffolk County Police Crime Stoppers and Financial Crimes Unit detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate an alleged identity thief operating in the Bay Shore area. The woman pictured is suspected of using the identity of a Bay Shore resident to open a credit card account at at Best Buy, located at 1851 Sunrise Highway, on August 5, then using the bogus account to purchase an Apple MacBook Pro and Apple AirPods – merchandise valued at approximately $2500.

The United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, ruled on August 22 that the Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) can move forward with plans to construct fencing in the Sunken Forest and employ both lethal and non-lethal methods to control the white-tailed deer population within it, according to a report released by Courthouse News Service.

The Fire Island Lifeguard Tournament is always a favorite event to cover. Still, this year, Ocean Beach Police Officer Andrew Becher sent us something a little different – a view from above. A licensed and talented drone operator, Becher's photographs have won Fire Island News journalism awards in past years, and he may do so again, as he caught all the action from a different perspective. This year, the Golden Torpe went to the Town of Islip, a machine that is hard to beat, but Ocean Beach and Saltaire Village have taken home their share over the past summers for sure. The skills of all these brave men and women are evenly matched, making for a competitive and close match every time. It's a sport developed in the interests of saving lives along the water. Congratulations to all!
